OECP PROJECTS KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA EXCHANGES

Working in partnership with Fujitsu Eirscot is delivering the infrastructure to enable BT Property to transfer it's capabilities from their telephone exchanges in Fulham and Chelsea to the West and South Kensington Exchanges respectively as part of their Operational Estate Consolidation Program project managed by Parsons.

The migration from Fulham to West Kensington Exchange required Eirscot to deliver ten new Manholes carrying a kilometre of 12 & 15 way duct in two phases. Phase 1 running from Fulham Exchange along the North End Road to the A4 Read more, with phase 2 from the A4 to West Kensington Exchange.

The Chelsea to South Kensington Exchange migration involved the construction of five BT manholes and laying approximately 1km of 15 way ducting in the environmentally challenging environment Read more

BT MANHOLE PROJECT ACTON HIGH STREET.

Contract Duration 3 months
Contract Location Acton, London
Local Authority London Borough of Ealing

Contract Brief

To design and build a new multi level manhole at a point of cable damage to copper and fibre cables caused by another utility thrust boring across Acton High St to install a new water main. The damage was located at a depth of approximately 4 meters where the thrust bore cored through the concrete block containing the duct which had been installed by timber lined tunnel techniques many years previous.

Special Engineering Difficulties

This project proved challenging due to the presence of a Thames Water foul sewer of 300.mm diameter running through the excavation and the necessity to pick up another 9 way block of duct at a cover depth of 2.5M. Although this sewer could not be contained within the new structure it would have to be both protected and supported during the works. A non standard design was produced and approved along with a design solution to support the live sewer which was approved by Thames Water. A dilapidation survey was carried out on the sewer with video records taken before and after completion of works.

The total excavation depth exceeded 6 meters and proved problematic due to the running sand ground conditions found at a higher level.

The solution was to construct a two tier manhole with a step in from the lower level to the upper level with this step in now forming the support and position for the 300mm sewer. The upper level would now pick up the BT 9 way duct and the lower level providing a suitable working space for the BT jointers to complete there repairs to the damaged cables
